Glastonbury Festival 2013

Getting here by bike

As part of the Festival’s continued commitment to reducing audience transport CO2 emissions, we have this year teamed up with two organisations to offer a range of facilities to enable you to cycle to the Festival.

PoWWow Pedal Power will be running guided rides from Bristol to the Festival site, whilst Team Tor 2000 will be offering a luggage collection service and support and guidance to independent cycling groups and solo cyclists travelling from within a 20 mile radius, and beyond.

So this year why not swap four wheels for two (or even one!) and rather than booking a car park ticket, choose one of our cycling options, and become a green traveller.

Option 1 - Make your own way

Those wishing to make their own, self-contained way to the Festival by bike will still be welcome to come and camp in the Green Traveller cyclists' field. The Festival site is just a few miles south of Route 3 of the National Cycle Network, which runs between Glastonbury and Wells. Head for the Yellow gate. For route planning advice, check out Cycle Streets' Glastonbury Route Planner or the Dept of Transport's Cycle Route Planner.

Option 2 - PoWWow Pedal Power guided ride from Bristol:

Who are PoWWow?
PoWWow Pedal Power is a not-for-profit community-based group who promote cycling at events around the country. This year the Festival is teaming up with PoWWow to organise guided bike rides from Bristol.

What are they offering?
PoWWow are running a guided bike ride from Bristol to the Festival. It will be mainly on off-road routes and quiet roads, and their team of experienced ride leaders will be on hand to help you along and deal with any issues you might have. They will carry your luggage in their support van so you don't have to worry about strapping a tent to your bike!

Who is it for?
If you're 18 or over and want to get to the Festival in style while reducing your environmental impact then this option is for you! If you live in Bristol or can get there on Wednesday then they'd love to have you along.

How long will it take?
It is about a 24 mile cycle ride along country roads over the Mendip Hills. We will set off around 10.30am and stop at a pub for lunch and aim to get to the festival site for around 6pm.

What do I need?
A bike, in working order (PoWWow’s mechanics will be on hand to fix any basic problems but won't have time for any big repairs!) Also, while the ride leaders are here to help, you're responsible for your own safety so should be competent enough on a bike to ride on quiet roads. You must have a festival ticket to join the ride. It will also be useful to bring a mobile phone, water and snacks, waterproof clothing, a helmet if you want to wear one - and of course a big smile!

How much does it cost?
We require a deposit of £20 in order to secure your place on the ride. £10 of this will be used to cover the costs of running the coaches and the other £10 will be refunded after the festival. If you wish you can donate it to Pow Wow to support their voluntary work in promoting cycling, renewable energy and combating climate change through fun and positive environmental events.

What about getting home?
A coach back to Bristol will be provided on Monday 1st July, after the festival, which is included in the booking price. It leaves at 11.30pm from the coach park. Your luggage will be transported with you on the coach, and your bike will be returned separately the next day, Tuesday 2nd July, at 5.30pm, to the starting location. Or, if you prefer, you can make your own way back from the festival with your bike and luggage.

How much luggage am I allowed?
1 tent and 2 bags weighing a maximum of 20kg together. NO bags will be excepted without a zip (so no carrier bags please)

DO NOT LEAVE YOUR TICKET IN WITH YOUR LUGGAGE YOU MUST CARRY IT ON YOU WHILE CYCLING TO GAIN YOU ENTRY TO THE FESTIVAL

As option 3a, but if you are too far from local towns or if you don’t want to drop luggage off at shops you can still ride either with your luggage on the bike or put it in a friend's car if that saves 2 cars travelling to the site.

If you want to you can just make your own way to the festival by bike and enjoy the benefits of being a Green Traveller and an allocated camping field.

Although we will not be providing a luggage service, please register with us so that you can use the bike lock-up and cyclist camping area.

We are unable to provide a bike hire facility or repair service but will have pumps and puncture repair at site if required but you will probably have to fix punctures yourself. If you have any other bits you think we should try to provide please tell me and I'll see what I can do.

HOW IT WORKS.

- You will need to drop off your luggage at local bike shops/sports centres on Monday 24th June.
- Your luggage will be numbered and tagged and you will be given a corresponding numbered wrist band at the drop off point. You will sign your luggage into the shop to prove you have dropped it off there. Bags that are too heavy (over 20Kgs) will be rejected

The campsite is just inside the main entrance at the bottom of Pilton hill just north west of the John Peel stage. This entrance is mainly used by the people using the bus transport system so will be quietest early on Wednesday and Thursday mornings for early risers to avoid queues.
