Worthy cows win highest yield awards!

March 6, 2014

We’re very proud to announce that the Worthy Farm herd has won the prestigious 2014 Highest Yielding Herd award presented by the Somerset Holstein Club. Plus, Leduc Unwin won the award for Somerset’s Highest Yielding Cow and Dayton Belle took the prize for the county’s Highest Yielding Heifer. The Worthy herd has also been named the fourth-highest yielding herd in the whole of the UK.

“We last won the Somerset Highest Yielding Herd award two years ago,” says Worthy Farm’s Herd Manager, John Taylor. “That’s the big one, so it’s good to have won it back. And it’s our first time in the Top 10 nationally. We’re all very pleased.”

John puts the success of the herd down to a number of factors: “Good breeding, good management and the investment that Michael Eavis has put into making the cows comfortable.”

He’s also hopeful that the Worthy herd can go even higher in next year’s national yield results. “We’ve got some really good silage this year,” he says, “so fingers crossed!”
