Poetry&Words: In the Beginning was the Word...

Poetry&Words has been an integral part of Glastonbury Festival for almost two decades, bringing a truly stellar cast of top spoken word artists to these falafel-covered, mud-splattered, flag-fluttering fields. Conceived by the late, great Pat V T West and handed over to Helen Gregory in 2008, the stage continues to play an important part in making Glastonbury much more than a mere music festival. Once again, the line-up for 2011 has been carefully selected from literally hundreds of applications, so that you can experience the absolute best in poetical entertainment. Leave the sweaty hordes far behind you and stop by for …
Things to make you go Mmmm: Thigh-slappingly entertaining verse from the be-suited and bespectacled John Hegley (accompanied by double bass player Keith Moore); understated hilarity from Wondermentalist Cabaret’s Matt Harvey; and high energy antics from poetry-music tour de force Sound of Rum.
Things to make you go Mmmm, Mmmm, Yeah: 2010 favourites Poeticat and Pete the Temp, back by popular demand; Bespoken Word’s Alfred Lord Telecom; punk poet Attila the Stockbroker; and top Poetry&Words newcomer, Anna Freeman.
Plus: Official Website Poet in Residence, Longfella (AKA Tony Walsh); the ever popular Glastonbury Poetry Slam; and much, much more. All delivered in style by the most vivacious, verbacious comperes on site, Paula Varjack and dreadlockalien.
There's also the opportunity for you to get involved. Saturday sees the return of the open mic, hosted by the dry wit of Pete Hunter, while Poetry& Words climaxes on Sunday with the Glastonbury Festival Slam, as poets battle it out to see who will win a spot in the 2013 Poetry&Words line-up. (Sign up for the open mic and slam at the Poetry&Words tent. Places are limited.)
Poetry&Words, helping to put the Mmmm into mellifluous.
