joanJoan Armatrading is to be a special guest at the Glastonbury Abbey Extravaganza on 8th August, Michael Eavis announced today.

The singer is currently mid-way through her last major world tour and will be joining Ray Davies, who was lead vocalist and songwriter for The Kinks, for the annual extravaganza at Glastonbury Abbey.

The Shires will also be bringing their country-influenced music to The Extravaganza.

This year’s event – the 19th in a long running summer tradition for the West Country – will take place in the grounds of Glastonbury Abbey and will end with the traditional firework display.

Says Michael: “These are two fantastic acts which along with Ray will really make a superb Extravaganza; from Joan, who is a legend and has performed for 42 years plus has numerous awards and hits under her belt, to The Shires, who are making a name for themselves within months of being formed. It will truly be a night to remember.”

Since Abbey Extravaganza tickets went on sale Ray Davies has won an Olivier Award; one of four for the critically acclaimed musical Sunny Afternoon which tells the story of his early life and the rise to stardom of The Kinks.

Janet Bell, Abbey director, said: “To have these world-class performers showcasing their talent in the abbey grounds is going to make a for a wonderful event. We are so grateful to Michael for making it possible. It is bound to be a summer highlight for many.”

Last year Robert Plant and the Sensational Space Shifters took to the stage for a sell-out night with the help of George Ezra. Previous stars have included Status Quo, Madness, Van Morrison and Jools Holland and Bryan Ferry and The Bryan Ferry Orchestra.
